I recently traveled in northeast Finland south of Lapland and bordering Russia to area of Kuusamo and Ruka. It had been a part of a pre-trip for the Nordic Blogger Experience that I had been invited as a speaker to talk about YouTube videos in partnership with Finnair.
Skiing in Ruka
Kuusamo is the municipality within the Northern Ostrobothnia region’s name and a town.
Ruka is regarded as the number one ski resort city in all of Finland.
Era-Susi Husky Farm
The very best method is to have a 1 hour and 15 min flight with Finnair. I would not suggest as it requires over 9 hours, driving plus there are stretches in which you do not see a soul for extended hours.
Floating in the Rapids
The place is freezing! I seen in January if the average temperatures have been around -10 C or 14 F on a daily basis. You will surely have to wear underwear and at least another four layers of clothes, and a scarf, gloves and hat in all times!
Snowshoeing in the Oulanka National Park
There are many things to do in Kuusamo and Ruka but here I’m going to highlight what we did and also add a list of items I suggest that you start looking into.
Wild Food Dinners
With over 200 days of snow a year, you essentially can skiing in Ruka from October. Its renowned worldwide for being a ski resort it’s the only ski resort in Finland and where you are able to ski over fifty percent of this year. You’ll find 32 slopes and 21 lifts across them with five of these being seat lifts.
Snow boarded until they do or When you have not snow have ski vacation where they may teach you the fundamentals. Also, you may rent all of the equipment you need here but I would recommend bringing ski pants.
They offer from a single run overhaul, a 1 — 10 days pass for people that return regularly to ski in exactly the same season and pass.
I thought the slopes had been amazing! I really like skiing and these slopes weren’t tough. One of my favorite parts was moving skiing and skiing it was magical. See more!
Oh, before heading out and also in the slopes we seen a bar after some hours of ski to receive a wonderful beer!
In the resort city of Ruka, you are able to scale the Kuru Wall, a 35-meter ice wall in the Ski area. The notion is that you are able to challenge yourself to get something new while being in a winter environment that is safe and is terrific for adults and to children.
Everybody go back shortly after the app to share with a hot drink and tales of their expertise and matches up in Ruka Village.
Receiving of your safety and after meeting your guide and scaling equipment. This includes how to use the proper safety equipment and all of the climbing equipment you get that you are able to climb with assurance.
Following this, approximately 10 minutes will walk . It is ideal to beginners who are strong enough to use an axe in the ice along with the encounter lasts for around 3.5 to 4 hours.
This was really one of my favorite activities. It is a great deal simpler than rock climbing. You essentially use your feet for up you along with also the axes to keep you secure. Its thighs that are 80% and 20% arms. Also your professional climbing instructor explains everything and cause you to truly feel safe.
We started our Sauna tour encounter at the Lakeside Sauna of Lisakki. This sauna is just one of the saunas to be awarded the Finnish Sauna Experience certification.
Your guide will speak with you regarding the Finnish sauna culture and it’s such an significant part their daily life. Our guide showed us a little sauna yoga, then after I jumped to refresh my physique!
We went to the sacred sauna, in which we underwent the different saunas — the hockey sauna and also the smoke sauna. The ice sauna is essentially it’s a distinctive experience . however, it is wonderful!
We visited with the smoke sauna that’s the sort of Finnish sauna. It does get quite hot so as soon as you believe that you can not take the heat you head outside and have a dip.
I did so every chance I got, it is something unique that you simply can’t describe until you try it!
I was really excited for our trip. This husky farm includes over 250 huskies! Every one of them is prepared to go running from the snow and filled with energy.
In addition to huskies, additionally they have reindeer, sheep, goats, llamas, ducks, ducks, geese, turkeys, bunnies along with horses. They’re open daily from 10 am to 3 pm.
The 1 thing if you see you need to do is take a dog sled trip. If you are seeking a brief ride, the plantation provides a 2km (35 mins), 5km (60 mins) plus a 10km (90 mins) ride.
Additionally they offer 20 km (two hours), 30 km (3 hours) and even if you would like to do something truly special you can choose a two day or 5 day husky safari tour.
The puppies are playful and very beautiful! When you walk out to the departure area you’ll observe the dogs getting excited to hit the snow. They like to run! Normally the puppies will put their male partners with lots of popping them down and barking in place.
Also, Susi Nordman or’The Wolf’ is an wonderful guy! He gave us so much information about the puppies which I am truly contemplating doing a 5 day tour.
I would be lying if I did not say I was a little nervous about this region of the encounter! Of floating along on a lake of ice, the notion sounds quite cold and somewhat unappealing. However, the truth is that you employ. This means that you don’t become in how I thought along with the encounter ends up being quite relaxing.
There is a guide who explained how to float along with to get in and out of the water After you arrive. Balaclavas and snowmobiling helmets and you are supplied with thermal overalls as well as wool socks, gloves, boots so you do not need to be concerned about bringing expert equipment.
Group sizes are at a minimum four adults and children below the age of four are all free of charge so long as they are over 160cm in height. And do not worry about cleanup on your Finnish, the guides speak English.
The group moves to the head of this flow to start, After everyone is confident about what they are doing. You have just two 15 minutes’ periods of drifting on the lake and whenever you are in the water , almost to the verge of falling 32, the trick is to relax. It’s certainly worth trying this experience if you are going to the area.
When a place is to visit in Europe in line with Lonely Planet, then you are aware this is an area worth seeing. The park is the unspoiled winter wonderland with snow and is seen by most tourists all year around to experience snow wildness that is coated and its distinctive ice.
The park provides something for everyone and is accessible by car and public transport. In addition to trekking and snowshoeing, you may also go canoeing to see unique views of this amazing scenery. Look out for the rapids and waterfalls as well as several rare animal and bird species.
We used snowshoes to get the park around as it is a great deal easier to walk rather than wind up slipping and fallingout. The snowshoes meant you could stroll down the river across the Pieni Karkunkierros trail, which will be 12km in length and also are excellent to anchor you.
Along the length, we found an open wilderness hut called the Myllykoski Day Trip Hut before crossing the suspension bridge in which there were some epic spots to receive some photos — here I shot my favorite pictures of the area.
Every evening we ate crazy food dinners! The place we remained at and also ate was Isokenkäisten Klubi, a hotel about 2 km from the Russian border. They served us a mixture of poultry and reindeer as well as mushroom soup
Here we also did smoke sauna and Also jumped in the Arctic lake!
They is a great place to use as a foundation and have lovely log cabins where you are able to stay the night in a true Arctic-style house.
Among the items in Finland is that everyone has the right to pick mushrooms and berries that you find in the woods and there are lots to pick from.
Then there is the local the cloudberry, known as’the marsh gold’. Added to that are the plantations filled with fish like sardines, vendace and fish that frequently are caught by locals and functioned to their evening meal.
For some of the really authentic Finnish cuisine you can try meat products that are cold smoked for example steak and reindeer. You may also get reindeer kebab and wild boar as well as venison.
There are a range of spruce products that include syrups and vinegar as well as marmalades made in the berries divers collect.
Most of the crops are bigger because of the restricted time to grow but what they lack in size, they more than make up for with flavor!
The night in Kuusamo after the sauna tour we did a food dinner with Tapio in Kultana Ruka Salonki Kangas that the chef. The restaurant was located in the small house that has been covered in snow.
The food started with a tasty vegetable soup and the main course was salmon that has been cooked on the fire served with berries, vegetables and a sauce. It had been so excellent!
Two of the 3 nights, I Remained in Ruka from the Ski Inn.
So there is accommodation to suit a variety of sized groups including children they offer quite a few distinct villas.
Every one of rental cottages or the flats have a terrace or balcony with views across the area and also their own sauna. Free Wi-Fi is contained with all the rooms so that you can keep up to date.
The Inn is very much made to cater to ski fans, as its name suggests. There is a ski locker and upkeep room that residents have access to and a cupboard.
When you return from the slopes there are also microwave and dishwasher facilities for all those quick, warm up you snacks. The Inn is only a brief walk from the lifts and trails and being in the village so that you can delight in the areas to eat and drink that Ruka has to offer you.
Ruka and Kuusamo exceeded my expectations! That which I did to the very first time I did in this trip and I enjoyed everything! I’d say you need 7 — 10 full days to do it 27, if I went on a vacation or holiday to Kuusamo and Ruka.
You then head out for a different activity every day and can ski. Both items I’d love to have done that I suggest that you add to this list is snowmobiling and winter fishing.
I worked with the Matka Nordic Blogger Experience, Victorinox, Nobis along with Finnair.
Also a huge thanks to my new buddies, to making my trip extra special Su, Tara, Derek, Marcos, Hendrik and Nathaniel. All comments are my own!
